A catch-weight boxer with velvet gloves.
In a confluence of whimsical elegance and earthy undertones, the 2016 Caliber presents a bouquet of high tone cranberries, vanilla bean, and white pepper along with earthy and floral notes of mushrooms, alder, and bay leaf holding a firm grasp in the background. Pungent notes of violets and lavender also carry themsleves gracefully with cracked black pepper and rhubarb into your senses. Highly aromatic Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon along with a healthy dose of new french oak provided the basis fort this complex bouquet. A warm and highly textured entry to the palate carries sweet flavors of blueberry and olallieberry pie. More spicy notes of cardamom, fennel, and korintje interplay with sweeter notes of toffee and plums on teh midpalate as tannin disperses and becomes velvety smooth. A finish of leather and cedar interact with rich flavors of cassis, all the while a moderate acidity and tannin provide a balance of textures to the bitter end. 18 months in barrel proved to provide plenty of time for oak integration into this wine, creating the many layers of complexity; Never one dominated by another.
