Oftentimes the burliest wine of our lineup, the Black Orchid is hardly ever a misnomer of its namesake, and this vintage is no exception. Deeply layered with rich and inky complexity, yet peppered with elegant spice and perfumes, there is much to enjoy when it comes to this Petite Sirah. With this vintage we tested some extended barrel aging, hoping the extra time in oak would allow for more development and approachability of the wine in its youth. 31 months in total, we were so pleased with the end result that extended time in oak is now a standard practice for this wine. A little decanting before enjoying is still recommended, but a little goes a long way and shows how beautifully this wine will age over time. Purple violets and white pepper are a welcomed introduction to the nose and sticky notes of blackberry pie and raspberry jam follow up with hallmark Petite Sirah familiarity. Brown butter and charred cedar are fine sources of layering along with added spice of cracked black pepper, all of which contribute to a contested push-pull between rich and spicy. The bouquet in general is surprisingly open and inviting for a wine from a commonly closed-off and tight vintage. The palate is a different story: razor sharp and focused, flavors float from start to finish in a consistent stream of acidic fruits and spice. Blueberry, pomegranate, and cranberry dominate in the core with lentils and peppered spice coating the edges. Tannins are firm on the entry and edges but coating in the mid-palate, a textural disconnect that is likely to resolve and integrate with extra decanting or bottle aging. Carrying through to the end, a spruce of fresh rhubarb with seared steak are encapsulated in a long finish. A wine built to age but pleasantly open in its youth, it is one that can be enjoyed in many different ways over the course of its cellar life.
