Mourvedre 35%, Syrah 35%, Grenache 27%, Petite Sirah 3%
A brute with an ear for opera. sweet and brawny, casts a large shadow but speaks soft volumes.
Always a mixture of the odd ends of our blending process, the 2017 Crux was one of the biggest surprises when blending the vintage; A nod to the old winemaking notion that sometimes the best wines make themselves. Mourvedre, Syrah, and Petite Sirah from the ONX Estate offer much of the balance and direction for the profile of the cuvee, giving even aromatics and flavors as well as the silky smooth texture. The 27% Grenache hails from the newly purchased Kiler Canyon property and offers much of the volume in character found in this cuvee. Though a light variety, Grenache from this property in the Willow Creek District proves to do wonders, even in small amounts, for the aromatics and flavors. Ripe and saline aromas of cola and candied cherries dominate your senses, while fresh white pepper and rhubarb cut through those louder aromatics. Dark fruited blackberries and savory steak along with dried herbs such as oregano offer background notes, sure to pair well with a hearty meal. The palate boasts a concentrated entry of raspberries and cranberries that are circumvented by a strong acidity and minerality in the mid palate and finish. A sweeter side of sour candy and sugar cookies interplay with anise and black pepper, a stark array of flavors coinciding with intensity. This conundrum of flavors continues through a finish of concentrated red pomegranate and dragon fruit.
