A long, cool 2018 growing season in a cool climate meant an extreme amount of hang time for this Syrah from Bien Nacido Vineyards. This long hang time meant ample development of aromas and flavors and the ability to utilize stems during fermentation, which provides added structure and an earthy complexity to an already distinct and terroir-driven wine.
Aromas of salami, bacon, and fennel propel both a fatty savoriness and earthiness into the senses as pomegranate and black currants provide sweetness to the background. The entry is rife with tannins and an acidity that obtunds the senses before a cascade of green tobacco, soppressata, and black pepper emerge on the mid-palate. Mild in fruit expression but deeply layered and dense, tannins carry the wine through the finish with added flavors of cassis and savory chanterelle mushroom.
